Question 1

What is Datura metel used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Datura metel is used in carefully processed formulations to address conditions such as asthma, joint pain, and certain fevers. Its leaves have been used in medicated smoking preparations for respiratory relief. All such uses are administered by trained Ayurvedic physicians, not for self-treatment.

Question 2

Is Datura metel poisonous?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all parts of Datura metel are toxic due to the presence of tropane alkaloids including scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine. Ingesting any unprocessed part of the plant — particularly the seeds — can cause serious harm, including hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and in severe cases, death. It should never be consumed outside of a supervised Ayurvedic context.

Question 3

What does Datura metel look like?

Accepted Answer

Datura metel is a semi-woody plant growing to around one metre tall, with large, trumpet-shaped flowers that are typically white or pale violet and open in the evening. The fruit is a spiny, egg-shaped capsule. The plant has a slightly pungent smell and broad, softly toothed leaves.

Question 4

What is Datura metel called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Datura metel is commonly known as 'Ath-Thana' (ඇත් තනා). It may also be referred to in traditional texts by names reflecting its powerful properties. In Sanskrit Ayurvedic literature it appears as Dhatura or Unmatta.

Question 5

Where does Datura metel grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Datura metel grows primarily in the lowland dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, favouring open disturbed ground such as roadsides, scrubland edges, and waste areas. It is not a rainforest plant. It is also occasionally cultivated in home gardens and botanical collections for medicinal or study purposes.

Question 6

What alkaloids are found in Datura metel?

Accepted Answer

The main alkaloids are scopolamine (hyoscine), hyoscyamine, and atropine. These act on the parasympathetic nervous system and are responsible for both the plant's therapeutic properties in controlled doses and its toxicity at higher levels. Modern medicine uses isolated forms of these alkaloids in treatments for motion sickness, eye examinations, and as antidotes to certain poisonings.

Question 7

Can tourists see Datura metel when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Travellers visiting spice gardens, herbal gardens, or botanical parks — particularly in the Kandy region — often encounter Datura metel as part of guided medicinal plant tours. It may also be spotted growing wild along roadsides in the dry zone. Reputable guides will explain its properties and caution against touching or picking the plant unnecessarily.
