What is Canna indica used for in ayurvedic medicine?

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, the rhizome of Canna indica is primarily used for its cooling, diuretic, and demulcent properties. Traditional applications include formulations for fever, urinary conditions, and inflammatory disorders. The leaves have also been used as topical poultices for skin complaints.

Is Canna indica native to Sri Lanka?

Canna indica originates from tropical America but has naturalised widely across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It is now found growing wild across the island's wet and intermediate zones and is also cultivated in home gardens for both decorative and medicinal purposes.

What part of Canna indica is used medicinally?

The rhizome is the most medicinally significant part in Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition. The leaves and seeds have also been used in folk remedies in various South Asian contexts, though the rhizome is the primary subject of both traditional practice and contemporary pharmacological research.

What does Canna indica look like?

It is a tall, upright perennial with broad, deep-green leaves and showy red to orange flowers borne on terminal spikes. The plant typically grows between one and two metres tall. Small, very hard, round black seeds follow flowering.

Is Canna indica edible?

The rhizome of Canna indica contains significant quantities of starch and has been used as a food source in several cultures. The starch can be extracted and processed similarly to arrowroot. However, in Sri Lanka its primary documented role is medicinal rather than culinary.

Are there any scientific studies on Canna indica's medicinal properties?

Preliminary laboratory studies have identified antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties in various extracts of the plant, broadly supporting some of its traditional uses. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited, and the plant's use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Where can I see medicinal plants like Canna indica in Sri Lanka?

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy maintains collections of Sri Lankan medicinal plants. Ayurvedic wellness resorts and village herb gardens across the island also feature Canna indica alongside other documented species. It also grows abundantly in the wild along roadsides and paddy field borders.

Is Canna indica the same as ornamental garden canna?

Canna indica is the wild species from which many modern ornamental Canna cultivars and hybrids have been developed. Garden varieties are typically bred for flower size and colour and may differ significantly in their phytochemical composition from the wild medicinal species used in ayurvedic practice.
