Nestled within the historic city of Dambulla, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, Thilanka Resort and Spa offers a rare balance between a holiday resort and a spiritual retreat. Surrounded by a grove of mango trees, rice fields and the Dambulla River, the property sits across a beautiful 25-acre orchard that lends it a sense of calm quite removed from the pace of everyday life. Whether the visit calls for self-reflection or a long, unhurried family holiday, the setting lends itself equally well to both.

The resort is approximately 180 km from Katunayake International Airport — itself about 30 km from Colombo — and 72 km from the hill capital of Kandy. Dambulla also sits at a natural crossroads where the Colombo–Trincomalee and Kandy–Anuradhapura roads converge, making it straightforward to reach by road. For those who prefer a more scenic arrival, a seaplane from the International Airport reaches Dambulla in approximately 45 minutes.

Accommodation

Guests stay in beautifully appointed villas, each comprising four deluxe rooms decorated in vibrant colours that reflect the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. The rooms are designed with honeymoon couples and families equally in mind. Every guestroom is equipped with a 21-inch screen television, satellite channels, a DVD player, an electronic personal safe, a mini bar, a plunge pool, bathroom amenities, a hair dryer, an umbrella, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, and movies on demand. Upper-level rooms also feature a very spacious balcony, so mornings can begin to the sound of birdsong and views across the surrounding landscape.

Dining

The resort's main restaurant, The Rice, seats 110 guests and serves Sri Lankan and fusion cuisine across breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a more relaxed outdoor experience, The Araliya allows guests to dine open-air beside the paddy fields, with healthy, organic and natural food sourced from the resort's own orchard. A bar area provides a spot to unwind, and the pool terrace serves refreshing juices and hot coffee throughout the day.

Wellness and Ayurveda

The Ayurveda Spa at Thilanka is described as a therapeutic sanctuary. Treatments on offer include yoga retreats, a range of massages covering the head, shoulders, back, face, body and feet, Shirodara, fruit scrubs and wraps, steam baths, and Pancha Karma, among others. The spa is intended both for deep relaxation and for a more purposeful sense of renewal.

Recreation

Beyond the inviting outdoor swimming pool — lined with sun loungers along its terrace — the resort offers tennis, volleyball, archery and horse riding. Guests looking for something more active can explore the surrounding area on foot or by bicycle, or try their hand at fishing along the Dambulla River.
