Madathawalu (Traditional Rice)

Madathawalu is a well-loved short-grain red rice variety with deep roots in Sri Lankan agricultural tradition. Grown across all parts of the island, it stands out among the many heritage rice varieties of Sri Lanka for its impressive productivity and its enduring place in local farming culture.

The plant grows to a maximum height of 130 cm and can be harvested within just four months of seeding — a relatively short growing cycle that has helped make it a practical choice for farmers over generations.

Yield and Growing Characteristics

One of Madathawalu's most notable qualities is its exceptional yield. Each plant bears between 20 and 30 tillers, and the potential yield reaches around 110 bushels per acre. These figures place Madathawalu among the highest-yielding traditional rice varieties found in Sri Lanka, a distinction that contributes to its continued popularity in paddy cultivation today.
