Parangi Weligama Bay is a small Thema Collection boutique villa right on the beach at Weligama, with its own pool and direct access to the surf. Its design takes its cue from the spice traders and explorers who once sailed to Sri Lanka's south coast, with high-ceilinged rooms dressed in local art and artefacts, sea-view balconies on one side and private gardens on the other.
The villa's rooms are sold in two categories. Each covers a standard room and a larger family room, so tell us when you book which one you want. All rooms have air conditioning and a fan, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee making facilities, a TV with local and international channels, free Wi-Fi, a rain shower and Ayurvie toiletries.
Every room can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children. If the ocean view matters most, book Sea View Superior; if you prefer a quiet patch of garden of your own, book Garden Deluxe.
An in-house chef cooks Sri Lankan, Asian and international dishes, with plenty of seafood, using fresh local ingredients. You can eat on the beach, on the veranda overlooking the ocean, or indoors in the dining hall, and the Surf Café serves fusion seafood and cocktails between swims. Breakfast starts with freshly brewed coffee.
The pool looks out over the bay and gives straight onto the beach, and the hotel sits a few steps from Weligama's surf schools, so lessons are easy to arrange for beginners. Qualified therapists give in-room Ayurveda treatments and massages, from head and foot massages to a full herbal-oil sambahana, and yoga can be arranged on request; for more, Thema's own Ayurvie retreat is a five-minute tuk-tuk ride away. There are board games for quiet evenings, and the hotel also offers currency exchange, an on-call doctor and free parking.
The long crescent of Weligama beach is one of the best places on the south coast to learn to surf, and the small Taprobane Island sits just off its western end. Mirissa, about 2.4 kilometres away in a straight line, is the base for whale watching, which the hotel can book by catamaran or shared boat. Excursions offered by the hotel include snorkelling at Polhena, the mangroves and cinnamon villages of Koggala Lagoon, a guided walk around Galle Fort and a trip into the Kanneliya rainforest.
The hotel says Weligama is about 2.5 hours from Colombo using the Southern Expressway; from Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, allow longer. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Parangi Weligama Bay, which takes you to the door. By rail, Weligama station on the Coast Line is about 1.3 kilometres away in a straight line.
With only a handful of rooms around a pool on the beach, it suits couples, surfers and families who want a quiet, personal villa right on the sand rather than a large resort. Families travelling together can take the whole villa. For more choice along this stretch of coast see our places to stay in Weligama.
