This is the Sinhala translation of Sam's Story, the novel Capt. Elmo Jayawardena wrote in English, issued here as a new printing by M. D. Gunasena. The entire text is in Sinhala, so a reader ordering from outside Sri Lanka should be comfortable reading the language — there is no English text in this edition.
Jayawardena, a pilot by profession, received the Gratiaen Prize, the award given for creative writing in English by Sri Lankan authors.
The novel was later adapted for the screen under the same Sinhala title, Semige Kathawa. Jagath Chamila won the best actor award for his performance in that film at the New York City film awards in the United States.
For readers who know the story in English and want it in Sinhala, or who are building a shelf of contemporary Sri Lankan fiction in translation, this edition puts the book in the language most of the island reads it in.
