A youth novel in Sinhala by Bandusena Gunasekara, drawing on historical tradition and folklore for its setting and material. The text throughout is Sinhala, with no English translation, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading the language.

The story follows two brothers who leave their village and district after an enemy attack and must make their way into an unfamiliar life. That displacement is the spine of the narrative, and the brothers' adjustment to new surroundings carries the book from beginning to end.

Gunasekara, a professor, has shaped the novel with young readers in mind. It is written to encourage the qualities the author associates with children growing into the world ahead of them — strength of character, a sense of attachment to country, and the courage and spirit of adventure he takes to be natural to childhood. The historical and folk material gives the story its frame rather than serving as a subject of study in itself.

Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Colombo house. Of interest to Sinhala-reading families abroad looking for fiction for older children and teenagers, to teachers and librarians building a Sinhala collection, and to adult readers of Sinhala youth fiction.
