Beddegama

Desde€2.36

A.P. Gunaratne's Sinhala rendering of the novel written by Leonard Woolf, the Englishman who served as a civil servant in Ceylon. The whole text is in Sinhala; buyers ordering from outside Sri Lanka should know that before they order.

The story is drawn from Sinhala village life in a settlement set against the jungle. Woolf wrote it from what he observed of that society during his years in the colonial service, and Sinhala critics have long discussed the book as an English novel in which an outsider saw village life with unusual clarity. Gunaratne's translation brings that material back into the language of the people it describes.

Beddegama has a place in Sri Lankan school reading as well. When the Advanced Level syllabus was revised, it was the Sinhala novel prescribed for study over the years that followed, which is why it remains steadily in demand among students and teachers.

This is a reprint, issued after the text was reset; the format has been changed from the earlier printing.
