Vrishabha and Kataka Porondam

Vrishabha (Taurus) and Kataka (Cancer) sit close together in the zodiac, and their rashi-level matching reads quite differently depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains those results in both directions, then shows why the two birth stars, not the rashis alone, decide a real porondam or porutham.

Which Vrishabha and Kataka are we talking about?

In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person's rashi here may differ from the 'star sign' they usually quote.

At the rashi level, three items are checked. The rashi count looks at how many signs lie from the bride's sign to the groom's. The rashi lords item asks whether the two ruling planets are friends; Vrishabha is ruled by Venus and Kataka by the Moon. Vashya considers a traditional affinity between the signs. Because the count is taken from the bride's sign, the results change when the signs are swapped.

What happens with a Vrishabha bride and a Kataka groom?

Counting from Vrishabha to Kataka gives 3. In the Sinhala porondam the rashi item is partly obtained for this count, while in the Tamil porutham the rasi item is not obtained.

The rashi lords item is not obtained in both systems. Venus and the Moon are not mutual friends: one regards the other as neutral, and the other regards it as hostile, so the friendship test is not met.

Vashya, on the other hand, is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil methods for this pairing. So in this direction, the rashi-level picture is mixed, with vashya the clear strength and the rashi count reading differently between the two traditions.

What changes with a Kataka bride and a Vrishabha groom?

Reversing the signs gives a count of 11 from Kataka to Vrishabha. For this count, the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil porutham, which is a noticeable improvement on the other direction.

The rashi lords item stays not obtained in both systems, because the relationship between the Moon and Venus is the same whichever partner holds which sign: neutral one way and hostile the other.

Vashya, however, is not obtained in this direction, in both traditions. So the strengths simply move around: here the rashi count is the positive item, whereas with a Vrishabha bride it was vashya. Neither direction obtains every rashi-level item.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Rashi items are only part of the picture. A full porondam or porutham is worked out from the two birth stars (nakshatra) and their quarters. Across Vrishabha and Kataka there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations, and outcomes vary considerably among them.

With a Vrishabha bride and Kataka groom, about 54% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), while about 70% read as weak on the Tamil side. With a Kataka bride and Vrishabha groom, about 44% pass the Sinhala porondam and about 35% read as weak in Tamil. In neither direction do any combinations show a rajju clash, and none reach 8 of 10 porutham.
