Is Passiflora foetida fruit edible?

Where can I find Passiflora foetida in Sri Lanka?

Passiflora foetida grows widely across Sri Lanka's lowland zones, typically in disturbed habitats such as roadsides, scrubland, and field margins. It is found in both wet and dry zones but is less common at high elevations. Botanical gardens such as Peradeniya also maintain documented collections of medicinal plants.

Why does Passiflora foetida smell unpleasant?

The species name foetida comes from the Latin word for foul-smelling, referring to the odour produced by the plant's glandular hairs when the leaves are crushed or disturbed. The scent is mild under normal conditions but becomes noticeable when the foliage is handled. This trait also serves as a natural deterrent to some herbivores.

Is Passiflora foetida native to Sri Lanka?

No, Passiflora foetida is native to tropical America and has naturalised across much of tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka. Its long presence on the island has led to its integration into local Ayurvedic practice, and it is now documented in Sri Lanka's formal catalogue of medicinal plants.

What are the active compounds in Passiflora foetida?

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, and saponins in Passiflora foetida. These compound classes are broadly associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties. Research is ongoing, and the full pharmacological profile of the plant is still being established.

Can Passiflora foetida become invasive in gardens?

Yes, Passiflora foetida can spread vigorously in warm, disturbed soils and is considered an agricultural weed in some contexts. Gardeners in tropical and subtropical regions should be aware of its climbing and spreading habit. In Sri Lanka, it is already widely naturalised and commonly seen along rural roadsides and hedgerows.
