Mesha and Simha Porondam

Mesha (Aries) and Simha (Leo) are a familiar pairing in Sri Lankan marriage matching, and the rashi-level results change depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains what the Lakpura calculator finds for each direction under both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham, and why the two birth stars matter far more than the signs alone.

Which rashi is being matched here?

The rashi used in porondam and porutham is the moon sign, or chandra rashi: the sign the Moon occupied at birth, worked out in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so someone who calls themselves a Leo may well have a different chandra rashi.

For this pair, three rashi-level items are checked: the rashi count between the two signs, whether the two rashi lords are friends, and vashya. Mesha is ruled by Mars and Simha by the Sun, and the calculator treats these two lords as mutual friends. The results differ by direction, so each is explained separately below.

What happens when the bride is Mesha and the groom is Simha?

Counting from the bride's sign to the groom's gives 5. With this count, the rashi item is not obtained in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil rasi porutham.

The other two rashi-level items are favourable. Because Mars and the Sun are mutual friends, rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi in the Tamil system) is obtained. Vashya (vasya) is also obtained in this direction.

So this arrangement has two of the three sign-level items obtained. That is only a partial picture, however, because most of the porondam and porutham items depend on the birth stars rather than the signs.

What changes when the bride is Simha and the groom is Mesha?

Reversing the roles changes the count. From a Simha bride to a Mesha groom the count is 9, and the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The rashi lords are the same two planets, the Sun and Mars, still mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi) remains obtained. This time, though, vashya (vasya) is not obtained.

Again two of the three sign-level items are obtained, just different ones. This is why families should always note who is the bride and who is the groom when reading any rashi pairing: the same two signs can give different item results depending on the direction.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi contains parts of several nakshatras, and each nakshatra is divided into quarters (padas). Between Mesha and Simha there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations in each direction, and the outcomes vary widely.

With a Mesha bride and Simha groom, about 30% of combinations reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham, while 41% fall into the calculator's weaker Tamil band and 41% have a rajju clash. About 56% pass Sinhala porondam, excluding the weekday check.

With a Simha bride and Mesha groom, about 25% reach 8 of 10, 41% sit in the weaker Tamil band and 41% have a rajju clash, yet 100% pass Sinhala porondam excluding the weekday. Only the actual stars show which group a couple belongs to.
