Question 1

What is Mallotus repandus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Mallotus repandus is primarily used for its root and bark, which are prepared as decoctions and pastes for conditions including joint inflammation, digestive complaints, and slow-healing wounds. Practitioners also reference it in compound formulations with liver-supportive properties. Traditional use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Where does Mallotus repandus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found across Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-country zones, particularly on the edges of secondary forests and disturbed scrubland in both wet and dry regions. It is recorded in the North Central Province dry zone as well as in transitional forests of the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces. It typically scrambles over surrounding vegetation using its flexible climbing stems.

Question 3

What family does Mallotus repandus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Mallotus repandus belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, one of the largest and most ecologically diverse plant families in tropical Asia. This family includes many species with documented medicinal uses across South and South-East Asia, and is well represented in Sri Lanka's forest ecosystems.

Question 4

Is Mallotus repandus safe to use as a medicine?

Accepted Answer

While Mallotus repandus has a long history of traditional use, self-medication is not recommended. Preparations should be made and administered by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess dosage, preparation method, and suitability for an individual's constitution and health condition. Clinical research on the plant remains in early stages.

Question 5

What does the name 'repandus' mean?

Accepted Answer

The Latin epithet 'repandus' refers to the wavy or undulating margin of the plant's leaves, which is one of its distinguishing botanical features. This descriptive naming convention is standard in Linnaean binomial nomenclature, where the species epithet often describes a visible morphological characteristic.

Question 6

How is Mallotus repandus identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

The plant is a climbing or scrambling shrub with broadly ovate leaves that have a distinctly wavy margin. It is dioecious, producing male and female flowers on separate plants, followed by small capsular fruits. Its habit of trailing over other forest-edge vegetation and its Euphorbiaceae characteristics help distinguish it from superficially similar climbers.

Question 7

Are there research studies on Mallotus repandus?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified terpenoids, flavonoids, and tannins in Mallotus repandus extracts, and in-vitro laboratory research has indicated moderate antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity. Large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited, and the scientific documentation of this species is an ongoing area of botanical and pharmaceutical research in Sri Lanka and India.
