Question 1

What gems is Sri Lanka most famous for?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is best known for its blue sapphires, particularly the variety marketed as "Ceylon sapphire," which is prized for its clear, medium-blue hue. The island also produces padparadscha sapphires, cat's eye chrysoberyl, alexandrite, and the blue-sheen moonstone that serves as Sri Lanka's national gemstone.

Question 2

Where is the best place to buy gems in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ratnapura is the traditional center of the Sri Lankan gem trade and home to both rough-stone markets and licensed dealers. Colombo and Galle offer polished, set stones in more formal retail environments. For added security, purchase from dealers licensed by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) and always ask for a laboratory certificate for significant purchases.

Question 3

Is it safe to buy gems as a tourist in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Buying from NGJA-licensed retailers significantly reduces risk. Ask for independent certification for any stone of value, and be cautious of unsolicited offers or deals that seem too good to be true. Attending a reputable gem workshop before shopping is one of the most effective ways to build the knowledge needed to buy confidently.

Question 4

What is a padparadscha sapphire?

Accepted Answer

Padparadscha is a rare variety of sapphire found almost exclusively in Sri Lanka, displaying a delicate pinkish-orange color reminiscent of a lotus flower — the word derives from the Sanskrit for lotus. It is among the most valuable colored gemstones in the world, with fine specimens exceeding the price of many blue sapphires of comparable size.

Question 5

Are Sri Lankan gems heat-treated?

Accepted Answer

The majority of sapphires and rubies sold worldwide, including those from Sri Lanka, undergo heat treatment to improve color and clarity. This is industry-standard practice and is not considered deceptive as long as it is disclosed. Unheated stones carry a premium and should be accompanied by a certificate from a recognized laboratory confirming their status.

Question 6

What is the difference between a Ceylon sapphire and a regular sapphire?

Accepted Answer

"Ceylon sapphire" is a trade designation for sapphires originating in Sri Lanka (Ceylon being the country's former name). They are typically associated with a characteristic medium to cornflower blue with a slightly silky, velvety appearance due to fine rutile inclusions. The origin designation commands a price premium, and reputable sellers can provide origin certificates from laboratories such as the GIA or Gübelin.

Question 7

Can I export gems I buy in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka permits tourists to export gems purchased for personal use without a special license, provided the stones are accompanied by receipts and certificates. Commercial-quantity exports require an NGJA export license. It is advisable to keep all purchase documentation and to declare high-value gems at customs to avoid complications on arrival in your home country.

Question 8

What is a gem and jewellery workshop in Sri Lanka like?

Accepted Answer

A typical workshop lasts two to four hours and covers gem identification, grading principles, the cutting and polishing process, and buying guidance. Many workshops include a hands-on component where visitors try faceting or setting, followed by a visit to a licensed showroom. Lakpura offers structured workshops departing from the southern coastal towns of Galle, Weligama, and Mirissa.
