Question 1

What is Cleistanthus pallidus used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Cleistanthus pallidus is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. Within traditional practice, plants from the Cleistanthus genus have been associated with treatments for inflammatory and skin-related conditions, though specific applications vary by practitioner and regional tradition. Any medicinal use should only be undertaken under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Is Cleistanthus pallidus toxic?

Accepted Answer

The Cleistanthus genus includes species that are known to contain toxic alkaloids and diterpene compounds. Cleistanthus pallidus is a distinct species from the more widely documented toxic species Cleistanthus collinus, but caution is still warranted. Self-administration of any plant in this genus without expert guidance is not advisable.

Question 3

Where does Cleistanthus pallidus grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The species is primarily found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing in tropical dry forests, scrublands, and secondary vegetation. It favours well-drained soils and is associated with the seasonal forest habitats found across the North Central, Eastern, and Southern lowland regions of the island.

Question 4

Which family does Cleistanthus pallidus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cleistanthus pallidus belongs to the family Phyllanthaceae, a large family of flowering plants distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The genus Cleistanthus itself contains dozens of species found across tropical Asia and Africa.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants are in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic pharmacopoeia and associated catalogues document hundreds of native plant species with recognised traditional uses. The exact number varies depending on the edition and compiling authority, but the total commonly cited runs to several hundred species spanning trees, shrubs, herbs, and climbers.

Question 6

Can I see Cleistanthus pallidus during a visit to a Sri Lankan national park?

Accepted Answer

It is possible to encounter Cleistanthus pallidus in dry-zone national parks and forest reserves, particularly in areas with intact dry deciduous forest. Parks such as Wilpattu and Udawalawe preserve representative habitats of the dry zone. A knowledgeable naturalist guide is the best resource for identifying specific plant species in the field.

Question 7

What is the meaning of the name Cleistanthus pallidus?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Cleistanthus comes from the Greek words for closed and flower, referring to the enclosed structure of the male flower in the group. The species epithet pallidus is Latin for pale, likely describing the pale colouration of the flower or bark that distinguishes this species from others in the genus.
