Question 1

What is Citrus hystrix used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Citrus hystrix, or kaffir lime, is used in ayurvedic and traditional Southeast Asian medicine to support oral hygiene, promote scalp health, and act as a blood purifier. The leaf oil and fruit rind are incorporated into topical preparations, aromatic steam treatments, and compound herbal formulations. Its antimicrobial volatile oils are also valued in post-partum care traditions across Sri Lanka.

Question 2

What does kaffir lime taste like and can you eat the fruit?

Accepted Answer

The juice of Citrus hystrix is intensely acidic and bitter, making the raw fruit unpleasant to eat on its own. However, the zest and double-lobed leaves are widely used as aromatic flavourings in Sri Lankan and Southeast Asian curries, lending a sharp floral citrus note to coconut-based dishes. The leaves are typically used whole and removed before serving.

Question 3

Is Citrus hystrix the same as a regular lime?

Accepted Answer

No. Citrus hystrix is a distinct species from the common lime (Citrus aurantiifolia). It is most easily recognised by its hourglass-shaped double leaves, its warty green fruit, and its exceptionally high concentration of aromatic essential oils — primarily citronellal — which make it far more pungent than ordinary lime. The two fruits serve different purposes in cooking and medicine.

Question 4

Where can I buy kaffir lime leaves in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Fresh kaffir lime leaves are sold in most Sri Lankan markets (polas) and supermarkets, often alongside other curry leaves and aromatic herbs. They are inexpensive and widely available year-round. Dried leaves and essential oil derived from the plant can be found in specialty spice shops and ayurvedic pharmacies, particularly in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle.

Question 5

Does kaffir lime oil repel mosquitoes?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have confirmed that citronellal, the principal compound in kaffir lime leaf oil, has meaningful mosquito-repellent activity. Traditional communities in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia have long used the crushed leaves or the oil to deter insects. While it is not a replacement for commercial repellents in high-risk settings, it is a well-regarded natural option with documented efficacy.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Citrus hystrix?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Citrus hystrix is most commonly referred to as 'Kahapeththa' or 'Kudalu dehi'. The plant is also known by regional and colloquial names across Sri Lanka, reflecting its long integration into local horticulture and domestic life.

Question 7

Is Citrus hystrix grown commercially in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Commercial cultivation of Citrus hystrix in Sri Lanka is limited compared with major export crops. The plant is primarily grown in home gardens, village plots, and ayurvedic herb farms. However, demand from the local wellness-product industry — including brands producing kaffir lime shampoos and bath products — has created a growing niche market for cultivated supply.
