Question 1

What is Cinnamomum dubium used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Cinnamomum dubium is catalogued among the ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka, indicating it has recognised uses within the island's indigenous healing tradition. Plants in the Cinnamomum genus are generally associated with digestive, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory applications, though the precise formulations involving C. dubium are documented in specialist Ayurvedic literature. Consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner in Sri Lanka is the best way to understand its current therapeutic applications.

Question 2

Is Cinnamomum dubium the same as Ceylon cinnamon?

Accepted Answer

No. Cinnamomum dubium is a distinct species from Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum or C. verum), though both belong to the same genus and family. Ceylon cinnamon is the commercially cultivated spice for which Sri Lanka is world-famous, while C. dubium is a separate species documented primarily within the island's ayurvedic botanical catalogue. Their chemical compositions and traditional uses differ.

Question 3

Where can I find Cinnamomum dubium in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

As a native forest species, Cinnamomum dubium is most likely to occur in the wet zone forests and mid-elevation habitats of southwestern Sri Lanka. Primary rainforest areas such as Sinharaja are the type of environment where wild Cinnamomum relatives persist. It is not a commercially cultivated plant and would not typically be found in spice gardens or markets.

Question 4

How many Cinnamomum species grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is home to several native Cinnamomum species alongside the cultivated Ceylon cinnamon. The exact count varies across botanical surveys, but the island's diverse wet zone forests support a number of endemic and indigenous relatives within the genus. Research into these species continues as part of broader efforts to document Sri Lanka's plant biodiversity.

Question 5

What is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants used in the island's traditional healing system. This catalogue documents species, their local names, and their recognised uses, serving as a reference for practitioners, researchers, and regulators. It preserves indigenous botanical knowledge and supports quality control in the local herbal medicine industry.

Question 6

Can tourists experience ayurvedic plant traditions in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka has a well-developed Ayurvedic wellness sector, with centres ranging from hospital-grade clinics to resort spas. Many offer guided herb garden walks, consultations with registered Ayurvedic physicians, and treatments using locally sourced plants. Spice gardens in areas like Matale and Galle provide accessible introductions to the island's medicinal botany for general visitors.

Question 7

Are wild Cinnamomum species in Sri Lanka under any conservation pressure?

Accepted Answer

Like many native forest plants, wild Cinnamomum species in Sri Lanka face pressure from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, including ironically from cinnamon cultivation itself. Conservation efforts through protected areas, botanical gardens, and academic documentation aim to preserve the genetic diversity of the island's laurel family plants. Documenting species like C. dubium is a step toward understanding what needs to be protected.
