Question 1

What is Bauhinia tomentosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, the bark, roots, leaves, and flowers of Bauhinia tomentosa are each used in traditional formulations. Common applications include bark decoctions for skin conditions, root preparations for digestive complaints, and leaf poultices for inflammation. Treatments are typically administered under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where can I find Bauhinia tomentosa in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most common in Sri Lanka's dry lowland zone, particularly in scrub forests and forest margins in the North Central and North Western provinces. It also appears in home gardens, temple grounds, and along roadsides in drier parts of the island. Travellers exploring dry-zone wildlife areas may spot it growing at forest edges.

Question 3

What does the Bauhinia tomentosa flower look like?

Accepted Answer

The flowers are large and pale yellow, often with a dark reddish-purple blotch at the base of one petal. They are short-lived, typically opening in the morning and falling by afternoon, but the plant blooms over an extended period. The distinctive two-lobed, hairy leaves also make the plant easy to identify.

Question 4

Is Bauhinia tomentosa the same as the orchid tree?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia tomentosa belongs to the same genus as the more commonly cultivated orchid trees such as Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia variegata, but it is a distinct species. It differs in its smaller size, woolly leaf texture (hence 'tomentosa'), and yellow rather than pink or purple flowers. All Bauhinia species share the characteristic bilobed leaf shape.

Question 5

Is Bauhinia tomentosa native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia tomentosa is native to a broad range spanning tropical Asia and Africa, and is well established in Sri Lanka's dry zone. It is not exclusive to the island but has been part of local flora and traditional medicine for centuries. The species is formally catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant register.

Question 6

Are there scientific studies on Bauhinia tomentosa's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Yes, phytochemical research has identified compounds in Bauhinia tomentosa with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Studies have examined extracts from the bark, leaves, and flowers. However, large-scale clinical trials are limited, and the plant's use in modern medicine remains an active area of research rather than established pharmaceutical practice.

Question 7

How is Bauhinia tomentosa different from other plants in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue includes hundreds of species, each with distinct applications. Bauhinia tomentosa is particularly noted for its astringent bark and anti-inflammatory leaf preparations, setting it apart from species like Acacia chundra or Pongamia pinnata, which are used in different therapeutic contexts. The plant's broad availability in dry-zone habitats has made it accessible to traditional healers across the island for generations.
