Question 1

What is Barringtonia racemosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, the seeds, bark, leaves, and roots of Barringtonia racemosa are used in various formulations. The seeds are associated with respiratory complaints such as coughs and asthma, the bark with skin and rheumatic conditions, and the roots with digestive disorders. Always consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before use.

Question 2

Where does Barringtonia racemosa grow naturally in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows in wet and intermediate zones, favouring waterlogged soils along riverbanks, lagoon edges, and areas adjacent to mangrove forests. It is commonly found in the southwestern coastal wetlands and also appears along tank margins in the dry zone.

Question 3

What does the Barringtonia racemosa flower look like?

Accepted Answer

The flowers are white to pale pink with long, brush-like stamens, giving them a distinctive powder-puff appearance. They grow on long, pendulous racemes that can exceed 50 cm in length and open at night, attracting bats and moths as pollinators.

Question 4

Is Barringtonia racemosa toxic?

Accepted Answer

The seeds contain saponins and other bioactive compounds that can be toxic, particularly to fish — a property historically exploited in traditional fishing practices. Ingestion without proper preparation by an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner is not advised, as the plant's compounds can be pharmacologically active in humans as well.

Question 5

What family does Barringtonia racemosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

Barringtonia racemosa belongs to the family Lecythidaceae. It is one of several Barringtonia species distributed across coastal and wetland habitats in South and Southeast Asia.

Question 6

How is Barringtonia racemosa different from Barringtonia asiatica?

Accepted Answer

Barringtonia racemosa produces long, drooping flower clusters (racemes) and prefers freshwater-influenced wetland margins. Barringtonia asiatica is a larger tree found along sandy coastal shores with a different fruit shape and is commonly called the sea poison tree. The two species are related but ecologically and botanically distinct.
