Ambalama, Galle, Sri Lanka
The word Ambalama means "resting place" in Sinhalese, and the name suits this intimate coastal villa perfectly. Situated along the scenic road that leads from Galle toward Matara, Ambalama sits on Dahawella Beach — a quiet, largely untouched stretch of coastline that is home to the Sri Lankan tradition of stilt fishing. The villa lies approximately 7 km south of the historic city of Galle and around 125 km from Colombo, making it an accessible yet genuinely secluded escape.
The property blends relaxed Sri Lankan coastal living with modern comforts, bringing together ocean views, lush garden terraces, an infinity pool, and attentive staff — all in a setting that invites guests to slow down and take in the surrounding ambience.
Accommodation
Ambalama offers four spacious suites, each with views of the ocean. The suites are arranged in pairs at either end of the villa, ensuring complete privacy — an arrangement well suited to families or groups of friends travelling together. Three suites feature king-sized double beds, while one is configured as a twin room. All four open through French doors onto a lawn terrace.
Each suite is appointed with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, dark wooden four-poster beds with comfortable mattresses, mosquito netting, and fresh linen. The en-suite bathrooms include twin vanities, hot water showers, and soft towels, and two of the bathrooms feature outdoor showers set within fully private enclosures.
Dining
Dining at Ambalama is flexible and unhurried — mealtimes are not scheduled, and the style of meals can be tailored to guests' preferences. The in-house chef prepares both local and international cuisine, served by attentive staff. A particular highlight is the BBQ featuring lobsters caught directly off the beach and fresh fish sourced daily from the local market. Guests who wish to be more involved are welcome to join the chef on trips to buy fresh fish and produce, turning a meal into an experience in itself.
Facilities
The heart of the villa is a large, open living room that looks out over the ocean, flowing naturally onto the terrace where an infinity pool with surrounding sun beds catches the sea breeze. The well-maintained gardens contribute to the overall sense of calm and privacy. The management arranges a variety of massage therapies on request.
Practical amenities include broadband internet access, roaming signals for mobile phones, an iPod dock with bass speakers, and a night watchman for security. Each room's private lawn terrace further enhances the sense of seclusion that defines a stay at Ambalama.
Getting There
Dahawella Beach is approximately 125 km from Colombo, and the drive from the airport takes around three and a half hours or more. The management can arrange airport transfers on request. For those preferring public transport, the southern railway line runs to Galle from Colombo Fort, from where bus services, taxis, and tuk-tuks are available to complete the journey to the villa.
