Ayurvie Weligama is a Thema Collection Ayurveda retreat by the sea at Weligama, on the south coast, offering doctor-led Ayurvedic and Panchakarma programmes and daily yoga. Guests stay steps from the quiet beach at Turtle Bay and eat vegetarian food matched to their constitution. With just 31 rooms, lofts and suites, and no young children, it is a calm place built around treatment rather than a beach hotel with a spa attached.
All rooms have air conditioning and a fan, free Wi-Fi, a safe, a kettle, a writing desk and Ayurveda-inspired toiletries by AyurVie. The four names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Ayurvie asks guests to choose rooms that suit their body constitution and colour preferences, in line with Ayurvedic thinking; the doctor will talk you through this at your first consultation.
Meals are served at Aahara, the retreat's restaurant, which cooks wholesome Sri Lankan food designed to support your treatment. The menu is vegetarian and Ayurvedic, adapted to each guest's dosha, and vegan dishes can be prepared on request.
The day is shaped by your programme. Ayurvie offers several treatment packages, from relaxation and rejuvenation to detox, stress management and weight reduction, each built around consultations with an Ayurvedic doctor, daily treatments such as Panchakarma therapies and herbal oil treatments, and two yoga sessions a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Ayurvie recommends staying 10 to 14 nights for a full programme. Between sessions you can walk on the beach at Turtle Bay, and the retreat can arrange cookery demonstrations, mangrove trips, whale watching and visits to Galle Fort.
The retreat is a short drive from the wide, sandy bay of Weligama Beach, popular with beginner surfers, and the tiny Taprobane Island just offshore. East along the coast are the beach at Mirissa and the viewpoint at Coconut Tree Hill, and on the edge of Weligama town is the old rock-cut statue at Kushtarajagala.
Weligama is on the south coast beyond Galle, reached from Bandaranaike International Airport by the Southern Expressway. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Ayurvie Weligama, which takes you all the way to the door. The coastal railway also stops at Weligama station, from where it is a short drive to the retreat.
It suits adults who want to give a week or two to a proper Ayurvedic programme by the sea, solo travellers (the Courtyard rooms are designed for one), and couples looking for a quiet, health-focused break. It is not suitable for families with young children. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Weligama, or the other Thema Collection hotels around the island.
