Miridiya Lake Resort is a garden hotel on the bank of Nuwara Wewa in Anuradhapura, a short drive from the sacred city's great stupas and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. Taken over and fully refurbished by the Sri Lankan group Lavendish Leisure, it is a comfortable base for exploring the ruins, with an outdoor pool, a restaurant and bar, and shady lawns that run down towards the water.
Rooms are spread between low garden wings with verandas and a three-storey block beside the pool. All have air-conditioning, a minibar and a flat-screen TV, and Wi-Fi is free. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
If a view of the lake matters to you, say so when you book, as not every room faces the water.
The resort sits in a large, mature garden of shade trees, palms and lawns on the eastern side of the town, beside Nuwara Wewa, one of the ancient reservoirs built by the kings of Anuradhapura. The outdoor swimming pool, ringed by sun loungers, is welcome after a hot morning among the ruins. There is a restaurant, a bar and a games room with a pool table, and the reception lounge opens onto the garden. Room service is available.
The hotel is well placed for the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first great capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment and brought to the island in the 3rd century BC, is a few kilometres away, beside the vast white dome of Ruwanweliseya and the smaller Thuparamaya. Further out are the brick giants of Jetavanaramaya and the Abhayagiri monastery, and the rock temple of Isurumuniya beside Tissa Wewa. Mihintale, where Buddhism was first preached in Sri Lanka, is about 8 kilometres east in a straight line, and Wilpattu National Park is within reach for a full-day safari.
Yes. Anuradhapura is on the Northern line from Colombo, and the main Anuradhapura station is about 2 kilometres from the hotel in a straight line, with Anuradhapura Town station a little further. A tuk-tuk or a pre-arranged pick-up covers the short final leg.
Anuradhapura is about 140 kilometres north-east of Bandaranaike International Airport in a straight line, a drive of several hours. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Miridiya Lake Resort, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits travellers touring the Cultural Triangle who want a quiet, green base with a pool close to the sacred sites, including families who need rooms for three or four. Two nights gives you a full day among the ruins and a morning at Mihintale.
