Daniel Defoe's castaway story, told in Sinhala by Edwin Ranawaka. The entire text is in Sinhala, so this edition suits readers at home in the language — Sri Lankan households abroad, schoolchildren reading in Sinhala, or anyone building a Sinhala-language shelf. There is no English text in it.
The story is the familiar one. A ship is wrecked at sea and one man survives it, swimming ashore to a deserted island where he lives alone for a long stretch of his life. His only companion, found by chance, is a dog. At one point he comes under attack from cannibals. Defoe was English, and his novel has held a marked place in world literature since it first appeared.
Many readers have taken it for a true account. It is not, though it is often said to draw on the experience of Alexander Selkirk, a Scot who survived a shipwreck and spent years alone on an island.
Published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-standing Sinhala and English language publishing house. For readers outside Sri Lanka, this is the kind of title that is straightforward to find in Colombo bookshops and much harder to come by elsewhere.
