Sergei Aksakov's Russian fairy tale Alen'kiy tsvetochek — The Scarlet Flower — in a Sinhala translation by Dadigama V. Rodrigo. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so readers will need the language to use it.

The story follows a merchant's youngest daughter. For her father's sake she goes to live with a strange beast, and over time she comes to love his kind heart. Her true love breaks the curse laid on him, and he is restored to his own form as a prince. It is a tale closely related to Beauty and the Beast, and it turns on the same idea: that what a person is inwardly matters more than how they appear.

Dadigama V. Rodrigo is known to Sinhala readers as a translator, and this volume brings a Russian children's classic into Sinhala rather than retelling it at a distance. It suits households reading aloud to children in Sinhala, younger readers working through stories on their own, and adults abroad who want their children to meet familiar fairy tales in the language rather than in English.
