A pop-up picture book in Sinhala, retelling the story of Aladdin for young children. It belongs to a series of fairy tales issued in the same format by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, prepared by Niranjan Chaminda Karunathilake.
The text is written in simple Sinhala, set against colour illustrations, and the book is bound with a hard cover. The pages lift and rise as they are opened — the scenes are built to stand up off the paper rather than lie flat on it. The format is intended for small children, for whom the physical business of opening a page is part of the reading.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that the book is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text. For a household raising children in Sinhala abroad, or for anyone building a children's shelf in the language, it reads aloud easily and the pictures carry much of the story. Readers with no Sinhala will still find the pop-up construction and the illustrations do a good deal of the work, but the words will be closed to them.
