This is a Sinhala translation, abridged, of Kidnapped — the historical adventure novel by the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. The whole text is in Sinhala, so a reader will need the language to use it; there is no English in the body of the book.
Stevenson built the novel on real events in eighteenth-century Scottish society, and a number of the characters in it were actual people of that time and place rather than inventions. The story is told in the first person by David, who recounts what happened to him: how he was kidnapped by his own uncle, and how he came to spend a stretch of time alone on a remote island. Premasiri Mahingoda has carried that narration into Sinhala in shortened form, keeping the first-person voice of the original.
Because it is abridged, this version moves at a reader-friendly length rather than reproducing Stevenson's full text. Readers who want the complete novel in Sinhala should look instead for the unabridged translation, published by Gunasena under the title Lama Kollaya.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is a long-established Colombo publishing house with a substantial list of Sinhala titles, including translations of foreign fiction. This one suits Sinhala readers meeting Stevenson for the first time — older schoolchildren, and adults who would rather read an adventure story in Sinhala than in English — as well as households building a shelf of translated classics in the language.
