Mariyam

Ab€3.63

A novel in Sinhala by Suranga Senanayeke, published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so a reading knowledge of the language is needed.

The story turns on love, loss and the ties between people. Mariyam's life is taken in the Easter Sunday terrorist attack on a church; what remains is the love she gave and the memory of her, both of which go on living in the novel's present. The coronavirus pandemic then spreads across the world, and people are left alone with themselves. Against death, religious extremism and contagion, the book holds that love, hope and human feeling do not die, and that the memory of someone loved stays in the heart for good.

It is a work of fiction built on events Sri Lankan readers lived through, written close enough to them that the grief is particular rather than general. Readers of contemporary Sinhala fiction, and those who follow how Sri Lankan writers have handled the attacks and the years that followed, are the natural audience.
