A Sinhala translation by Dedigama V. Rodrigo of the Russian novella by Boris Lavrenyov, the title of which corresponds to the work known in English as The Forty-First. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English alongside it, so it will be readable only to those who have the language.
Lavrenyov wrote the story in the early years of Soviet literature. It is a love story, and its themes are love and heroism; the events are placed against the Russian Civil War that followed the revolution. The novella has been taken to the screen, and the film versions carried it to audiences outside Russia.
Rodrigo's rendering has appeared in Sinhala before under other imprints. This is the M. D. Gunasena edition, issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.
