A board-style title for very young children, part of a series built around a single piece of paper engineering: every page is made to fold. Opened out, a page shows one thing; folded over, it shows another. The flap is the point — the child does something to the book, and something changes.
The subject here is numbers, at the most basic level: first acquaintance with numerals, for children who are not yet reading. The publisher, M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, presents it as an activity book as much as a picture book, on the grounds that small children stay with a book they can work with their hands.
A note on language for buyers outside Sri Lanka. This is not an English-language book. It is a Sinhala-English title, and the publisher's own description notes that Sinhala, Tamil and English all appear in it. The words on each page are brief — labels and numerals rather than sentences — so a non-Sinhala reader can use it, but the Sinhala script is present throughout and is part of what the book is for. Families raising children bilingually, or Sri Lankan families abroad who want early-years material in the language at home, are the readers it suits best.
Credited to Dolphine Press, it belongs to a run of similar flip-flap titles issued by Gunasena for the same age group.
