Question 1

What is Solanum capsicoides used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In ayurvedic practice, Solanum capsicoides has traditionally been associated with treatments for skin conditions, inflammation, and respiratory ailments. It is typically incorporated into compound formulations rather than used as a raw herb, given the toxic properties of the unprocessed berry. Classical practitioners apply careful dosage and processing methods before use.

Question 2

Is Solanum capsicoides the same as cockroach berry?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Solanum capsicoides is commonly called cockroach berry or soda apple in English. The name refers to the plant's round, bright orange-red berries, which somewhat resemble small tomatoes or chillies. Despite their appearance, the berries are toxic if consumed raw and should not be eaten.

Question 3

Where does Solanum capsicoides grow naturally in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most frequently found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, colonising roadsides, scrubland, and secondary vegetation along forest edges. It favours open, disturbed ground with good sunlight and is recorded across several provinces including the North Central and Southern regions.

Question 4

Is Solanum capsicoides toxic?

Accepted Answer

The raw berries of Solanum capsicoides contain steroidal alkaloid glycosides, including solasonine and solamargine, which are toxic if consumed directly. Traditional medicine systems are aware of this and use the plant only in specially prepared formulations under expert guidance. The plant should not be self-administered without proper knowledge.

Question 5

How is Solanum capsicoides different from Solanum aculeatissimum?

Accepted Answer

The two species are closely related and have been treated as synonymous in some older taxonomic literature. Both share spiny stems, white flowers, and orange-red berries. Current taxonomy recognises them as distinct species, though they have been used interchangeably in some traditional medicine contexts across tropical Asia.

Question 6

What alkaloids are found in Solanum capsicoides?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains steroidal alkaloid glycosides, most notably solasonine and solamargine. These compounds are of interest to phytochemists and pharmacologists for their potential anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and cytotoxic properties, though clinical research in humans remains limited.

Question 7

Which family does Solanum capsicoides belong to?

Accepted Answer

Solanum capsicoides belongs to the Solanaceae family, which also includes tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and potatoes. It is one of many species in the large Solanum genus, several of which have significant agricultural or medicinal importance worldwide.

Question 8

Can I see medicinal plants like Solanum capsicoides on a Sri Lanka tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes, travellers with an interest in ethnobotany can encounter plants like Solanum capsicoides in Sri Lanka's scrubland and forest-edge habitats. Ayurvedic herb gardens near Kandy and visits to reserves such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve offer opportunities to observe and learn about traditional medicinal plants with an informed guide.
