Question 1

Where is Sathmahal Ella waterfall in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sathmahal Ella is a tiered waterfall situated in the Uva Province hill country, within the Ella–Badulla corridor. It lies at mid-country elevation amid tea estates and montane forest, and is most easily accessed from Ella town as a base.

Question 2

How long is the hike to Sathmahal Ella?

Accepted Answer

The walk from the nearest road access point to the waterfall is typically under an hour each way on a moderately easy trail. The path passes through tea estate land and patches of forest, so allow extra time if you plan to explore along the way.

Question 3

What does the name Sathmahal Ella mean?

Accepted Answer

The name is Sinhala and translates roughly as "Seven Streams Fall," describing the way the water spreads across a rock face into multiple channels before reuniting in the pool below. The exact number of streams varies with seasonal flow.

Question 4

Is there an entrance fee to visit Sathmahal Ella?

Accepted Answer

There is generally no formal government entry fee to access Sathmahal Ella, as it does not sit within a gazetted national park. However, the approach may cross private tea-estate land where a small courtesy fee may be requested by local landowners.

Question 5

When does Sathmahal Ella have the most water?

Accepted Answer

The waterfall is fullest during and shortly after the inter-monsoon rains, particularly in October–November and March–April. During the main dry season it can reduce to a thin trickle, so visiting after a period of rain gives the most rewarding view.

Question 6

Are there leeches on the trail to Sathmahal Ella?

Accepted Answer

Leeches are active on the trail during wetter months, typically from May through November. Wearing long socks, applying a salt or DEET-based deterrent, and tucking trousers into socks are standard precautions that significantly reduce encounters.

Question 7

Can I combine Sathmahal Ella with other Ella attractions in one day?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Sathmahal Ella works well as a morning excursion, leaving the afternoon free for the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, or a tea-estate tour. A full day combining the waterfall with a cycling or cycling-plus-tea-fields activity is also practical from Ella town.
