Question 1

What is Rubus fairholmianus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Rubus fairholmianus is recorded in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue and is associated with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Related Rubus species are traditionally used in formulations for digestive complaints, fever, and skin conditions. Preparations should be made by qualified Ayurvedic practitioners rather than used in unprocessed form.

Question 2

Where does Rubus fairholmianus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found primarily in the montane and sub-montane zones of Sri Lanka's central highlands, typically at elevations above 1,000 metres. It favours forest edges, stream margins, and open scrub in areas with consistent rainfall and cooler temperatures, such as the hill country around Nuwara Eliya and the Knuckles Range.

Question 3

Is Rubus fairholmianus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, it is not strictly endemic. The species has also been recorded in southern India, particularly in the Western Ghats, which shares similar montane ecosystems with Sri Lanka's highlands. Within Sri Lanka it is largely confined to higher elevations and is not commonly found in the lowland dry zone.

Question 4

What family does Rubus fairholmianus belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Rosaceae family, the same botanical family as roses, raspberries, and blackberries. Within this family, Rubus is a large genus of scrambling shrubs found across tropical and temperate regions worldwide.

Question 5

What does Rubus fairholmianus look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a scrambling shrub with hooked prickles on its stems and leaf ribs. The leaves are pinnately compound, usually with three to five leaflets that are hairy beneath. It produces small white to pale-pink flowers followed by small aggregate drupelets similar to those of raspberries.

Question 6

How is Rubus fairholmianus different from common raspberries?

Accepted Answer

While both belong to the genus Rubus and share similar structural features — prickled stems, compound leaves, and aggregate fruit — Rubus fairholmianus is a wild, tropical-highland species adapted to the conditions of South Asian montane forests. Its fruit is smaller and less fleshy than commercially cultivated raspberries, and its primary documented value is medicinal rather than culinary.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintains one of the most accessible collections of labelled medicinal plants in Sri Lanka. Specialist Ayurvedic retreats and wellness centres in the hill country also offer guided introductions to the island's medicinal flora. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains official registers of recognised plant species and their uses.
