Question 1

What is Madhuca clavata?

Accepted Answer

Madhuca clavata is a tree species belonging to the family Sapotaceae, native to Sri Lanka. It is catalogued as part of the island's Ayurvedic medicinal plant heritage and is considered endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka. It is related to the more widely known mee tree (Madhuca longifolia) but is a distinct species with its own botanical characteristics.

Question 2

What is Madhuca clavata used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

The plant is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, suggesting recognised traditional uses. Related Madhuca species have been used in preparations for skin conditions, joint complaints, and respiratory ailments, and their seed oils have been applied topically. Specific clinical evidence for Madhuca clavata remains limited, and any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Is Madhuca clavata endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Current botanical records indicate that Madhuca clavata is endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is not found — or is extremely rare — outside the island. Its distribution appears to be concentrated in the dry and intermediate zones, though comprehensive field surveys are still needed to accurately map its range.

Question 4

Where can Madhuca clavata trees be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with scrub forest and riverine habitats in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, particularly in the North Central and North Western provinces. Protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park may harbour populations, though confirming sightings requires expert botanical identification.

Question 5

How is Madhuca clavata different from Madhuca longifolia?

Accepted Answer

Madhuca longifolia, the mee tree, is a widely cultivated and commercially harvested species known for its edible flowers and oil-rich seeds. Madhuca clavata is a separate, rarer species recorded mainly in Sri Lanka, distinguished by specific floral and fruit morphology. They share family traits but should not be used interchangeably for any medicinal or culinary purpose.

Question 6

Is Madhuca clavata a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

Like many endemic Sri Lankan tree species, Madhuca clavata faces potential pressure from deforestation and habitat change. A formal threat assessment under IUCN criteria specific to this species may not yet be widely published. Conservation of dry-zone forest habitats is essential to safeguarding species with limited ranges such as this one.

Question 7

What family does Madhuca clavata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Madhuca clavata belongs to the plant family Sapotaceae, a pantropical family of trees and shrubs. Members of this family are often characterised by milky latex, leathery leaves, and fleshy fruits, and several are economically important for their edible seeds, oils, and timber.
