Kataka and Tula Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan porondam (Sinhala) and porutham (Tamil) matching treats a couple whose rashis are Kataka (Cancer) and Tula (Libra). The rashi-level results differ depending on which partner is in which sign, but the final picture always depends on the two birth stars.

Which rashi is meant by Kataka and Tula?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so someone who calls themselves a Cancer or Libra there may have a different moon sign altogether.

Kataka is ruled by the Moon and Tula by Venus. Matching looks at a few rashi-level items, namely the rashi count, the relationship between the two rashi lords and vashya, and then at the birth stars. Because these items are counted from the bride to the groom, the results change when the signs are swapped, so both directions are explained below.

How does the rashi count work in each direction?

When the bride is Kataka and the groom is Tula, the count from the bride's sign to the groom's is 4. In the Sinhala system the rashi item is partly obtained, while in the Tamil system the rasi item is not obtained.

When the bride is Tula and the groom is Kataka, the count from bride to groom is 10. Here the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

This shows clearly why direction matters: the same two signs give a noticeably different rashi result depending on which partner holds which sign. Even so, the rashi count is only one item among several, and it does not decide the match on its own.

Are the Moon and Venus friends, and what about vashya?

The rashi lords here are the Moon (for Kataka) and Venus (for Tula). Their relationship is neutral and hostile, meaning one regards the other as neutral while the other does not regard it as a friend. They are therefore not counted as friends, and the rashyadhipathi (Sinhala) and rasi adhipathi (Tamil) items are not obtained in either direction.

Vashya, which considers a traditional affinity between signs, is also not obtained for this pair in both directions and in both systems.

These outcomes are fixed by the two signs alone. They form part of the overall assessment, but the birth stars carry far more weight in the final reading.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi contains parts of several nakshatras, giving 81 possible star-quarter combinations for this pair. The results across them vary widely.

With a Kataka bride and Tula groom, about 10% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), 60% come out weak in the Tamil reckoning, 4% show a Tamil Rajju clash, and none reach 8 of 10 porutham.

With a Tula bride and Kataka groom, about 88% pass Sinhala porondam (excluding weekday), only 6% are weak in Tamil, 4% show a Rajju clash, and again none reach 8 of 10.

So your actual result depends on your specific stars. Use the calculator with full birth details, and consult a family astrologer for marriage decisions.
