This page explains how Kanya (Virgo) and Tula (Libra) compare in Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. Here, rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes. The results differ depending on which partner holds which sign, so both directions are covered below.
What happens when the bride is Kanya and the groom is Tula?
Counting from the bride's sign, Tula is the 2nd rashi from Kanya. In the Sinhala porondam, the rashi item is not obtained for this count, and vashya is also not obtained. The Tamil porutham reads the same way: rasi and vasya are both not obtained.
The encouraging point is the rashi lords. Kanya is ruled by Mercury and Tula by Venus, and the two are mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (Sinhala) and rasi adhipathi (Tamil) are both obtained. These are only the sign-level items, though. They are a starting point, and the fuller picture comes from the two birth stars.
What changes when the bride is Tula and the groom is Kanya?
Reversed, Kanya becomes the 12th rashi counted from the bride's sign, Tula. The outcome shifts noticeably. In the Sinhala system, the rashi item is partly obtained, while rashyadhipathi and vashya are both obtained.
In the Tamil system, rasi is obtained and rasi adhipathi is obtained, because Venus and Mercury remain mutual friends whichever way round the signs fall. Tamil vasya, however, is not obtained in this direction. This shows how the two traditions can read the same pair of signs a little differently, and why the direction of counting from bride to groom matters.
Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashis?
The rashi items are only a few of the factors examined. A real match is decided by the bride's and groom's birth stars (nakshatra) and their quarters (pada). Across Kanya and Tula there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations in each direction, and their results vary widely.
With the bride in Kanya and the groom in Tula, about 37% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam (leaving aside the weekday factor), while none reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham and about 70% come out weak in the Tamil reckoning. With the bride in Tula and the groom in Kanya, about 95% pass the Sinhala porondam and about 42% reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham. In both directions, about 5% involve a Tamil rajju clash.
How should a family check a Kanya and Tula match?
Since the stars carry so much weight, the sign pairing alone cannot tell you whether a particular couple is well matched. The most useful next step is to enter both partners' full birth details, meaning date, exact time and place of birth, into the Lakpura porondam or porutham calculator. This identifies each person's moon sign, birth star and quarter, and shows every item in context.
For an actual marriage decision, it is wise to take these results to a trusted family astrologer. An astrologer can look at the complete horoscopes, explain how the different factors balance each other, and offer guidance suited to your family's own traditions.
