No, Ipomoea triloba is native to tropical America and has naturalised widely across the tropics, including Sri Lanka. Its inclusion in the Sri Lankan ayurvedic plant catalogue reflects the tradition of incorporating useful naturalised species alongside indigenous medicinal plants.

Question 5

Where does Ipomoea triloba grow in Sri Lanka?

It is most common in the lowland wet and dry zones, typically below 500 m elevation. It favours open, disturbed habitats such as roadsides, field margins, scrubland edges, and coastal areas where the soil may be sandy or lateritic.

Question 6

How can I learn more about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant traditions as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

Several spice and herbal gardens in the Kandy and Matale districts offer guided tours that cover medicinal plants catalogued in the Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition. Village experience tours and ayurvedic wellness centres also provide hands-on introductions to traditional plant knowledge within a cultural context.

Question 7

Is Ipomoea triloba considered a weed?

Accepted Answer

In some agricultural settings, particularly in rice paddies, Ipomoea triloba is managed as a weed because it competes with crops. At the same time, it can help stabilise disturbed soil and provides forage for small pollinators, giving it an ambiguous status as both a pioneer species and a farm nuisance.
