Question 1

What is Indigofera linnaei used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Indigofera linnaei has been used in South Asian and Sri Lankan ayurvedic traditions for its potential anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and dermatological applications. Preparations from the leaves, stems, and roots have been applied both internally and externally. Traditional use is well-documented, though robust clinical evidence from modern trials remains limited.

Question 2

Where does Indigofera linnaei grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most common in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, particularly in open grasslands, disturbed scrubland, and along roadsides in the north, northwest, and southeast of the island. It tolerates poor, sandy soils and thrives in full sun. It is rarely found in dense rainforest environments.

Question 3

Is Indigofera linnaei the same as the indigo dye plant?

Accepted Answer

No, though it belongs to the same genus as the true indigo dye plant, Indigofera tinctoria. While some Indigofera species contain indigo-related compounds, I. linnaei is documented primarily for its medicinal properties rather than dye production. The genus name reflects the blue dye heritage shared across the group.

Question 4

What family does Indigofera linnaei belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to Fabaceae, the legume or pea family — one of the largest plant families in the world. Like other legumes, it forms symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules, which helps improve soil fertility in the habitats where it grows.

Question 5

Is Indigofera linnaei endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Indigofera linnaei is not considered endangered; it is a widespread and adaptable species that colonises disturbed habitats across tropical Asia, Africa, and Australia. In Sri Lanka, it is included in botanical inventories of ayurvedic plants as part of ongoing efforts to document and conserve traditional plant knowledge rather than due to rarity.

Question 6

What parts of Indigofera linnaei are used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional practitioners have used various parts of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and roots. These are typically prepared as decoctions for internal use or as poultices for topical application. The specific preparation method varies by tradition and the condition being addressed.

Question 7

Are there any scientific studies on Indigofera linnaei?

Accepted Answer

Research on I. linnaei specifically is relatively limited, though phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids in related species. The plant appears in regional surveys of Sri Lankan and Indian medicinal flora. Comprehensive clinical trials establishing efficacy for specific human conditions have not yet been widely published.
