Question 1

What is Flacourtia inermis called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Flacourtia inermis is commonly known as lovi-lovi or batoko plum. The tree is recognised in the country's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog and may be referred to by local Sinhala names that vary by region.

Question 2

Is Flacourtia inermis fruit edible?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the fruit is edible, though it has a notably tart and acidic taste. It is eaten fresh, often with salt or spices, and is also processed into jams, jellies, and traditional syrups in Sri Lanka and other tropical countries where it grows.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Flacourtia inermis?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic tradition, the bark, leaves, and fruit of Flacourtia inermis are used for their astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional applications include support for digestive health and management of certain skin conditions, typically in compound preparations rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 4

Where can Flacourtia inermis be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows across the wet, intermediate, and parts of the dry zone in Sri Lanka, commonly in home gardens, rural estates, and at the margins of secondary forest. It is adaptable to a range of tropical lowland and mid-elevation conditions.

Question 5

Why does Flacourtia inermis have 'inermis' in its name?

Accepted Answer

The Latin word inermis means unarmed or spineless, referring to the fact that this particular species of Flacourtia typically lacks the thorns or spines found on related species such as Flacourtia indica. This makes it easier to manage in gardens and agroforestry plots.

Question 6

Is Flacourtia inermis the same as Flacourtia indica?

Accepted Answer

They are closely related but distinct species within the same genus. Flacourtia indica, known as Governor's plum, tends to have spines and darker fruit, while Flacourtia inermis is generally spineless and produces red to purple drupes. Both have documented Ayurvedic uses, but their specific applications can differ.

Question 7

Does Flacourtia inermis have any scientifically studied health benefits?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical research has identified flavonoids, tannins, and ascorbic acid in Flacourtia inermis, compounds associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. While traditional Ayurvedic applications are well-documented, clinical human trials remain limited, and the plant is best understood within the framework of traditional medicine rather than as a clinically approved treatment.
