Question 1

What is Filicium decipiens commonly called in English?

Accepted Answer

Filicium decipiens is most commonly called the fern tree or Japanese fern tree in English, owing to its delicate, fern-like pinnate leaves. Despite the common name, it is not a true fern and is not specifically associated with Japan. It belongs to the family Sapindaceae.

Question 2

Is Filicium decipiens a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Filicium decipiens is listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. Traditional practitioners have used parts of the tree, including bark and leaves, in formulations associated with skin and inflammatory conditions. Its medicinal use falls within the domain of traditional Ayurvedic practice rather than modern pharmaceutical production.

Question 3

What family does Filicium decipiens belong to?

Accepted Answer

Filicium decipiens belongs to the plant family Sapindaceae, which also includes lychee, longan, and soapberry. Within this family it is notable for its unusually fern-like leaf structure, which makes it visually distinct from most of its relatives.

Question 4

Where in Sri Lanka does Filicium decipiens grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The tree occurs naturally in Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone and is widely cultivated in gardens, temple grounds, and as a roadside avenue tree across the wet and intermediate zones. It favours well-drained, moderately fertile soils and areas with reliable rainfall.

Question 5

Can Filicium decipiens be grown as a garden tree in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a popular choice for home gardens and institutional grounds in Sri Lanka. It provides dense shade year-round, has a relatively non-invasive root system, and produces an attractive, fine-textured canopy. It grows best in the wet and intermediate zones but can adapt to a range of conditions once established.

Question 6

What does Filicium decipiens fruit look like?

Accepted Answer

The tree produces small fleshy drupes that ripen to a deep purple-black colour. The fruits are not commonly used for human consumption but attract fruit-eating birds, contributing to local biodiversity wherever the tree is planted.

Question 7

Is Filicium decipiens endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, it is not endemic. The species is native to a range that includes southern India, Sri Lanka, and parts of East Africa. It has also been introduced as an ornamental tree to other tropical and subtropical regions around the world. However, Sri Lanka is among the principal areas where the plant holds documented Ayurvedic significance.
