Question 1

What is Dimocarpus longan called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dimocarpus longan is commonly known as 'mora' or 'pani mora' in Sinhala. The English name is longan, sometimes written as 'dragon's eye' in reference to the appearance of the peeled fruit with its dark seed visible through translucent pulp.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of longan in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, longan fruit is considered a tonic that supports stamina, heart function, and recovery from fatigue. The seed and bark also feature in some traditional preparations addressing skin and digestive complaints. Any use for medicinal purposes should be under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Question 3

When does longan fruit in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Longan trees in Sri Lanka typically bear fruit once a year, with the harvest period generally occurring around mid-year. Exact timing varies with location, elevation, and local weather patterns in any given season.

Question 4

Is longan the same as lychee?

Accepted Answer

Longan and lychee are closely related — both belong to the Sapindaceae family — but they are distinct species. Longan fruit is smaller, has a thinner and less textured shell, and carries a slightly more musky, less floral flavour than lychee. Rambutan is another close relative also grown in Sri Lanka.

Question 5

Where can I buy a longan plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Grafted and air-layered longan plants are available from specialist nurseries and some agricultural supply centres across Sri Lanka, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Grafted stock is recommended because it fruits several years earlier than seed-grown trees and produces more consistent quality.

Question 6

Is longan good for health?

Accepted Answer

Longan provides vitamin C, potassium, iron, and B-vitamins, along with polyphenols in the seed and peel. It is refreshing and easily digestible as a fresh fruit. Because it contains natural sugars, those monitoring blood glucose should eat it in moderation. Dried longan has a higher sugar concentration than fresh.

Question 7

Does longan grow well in Sri Lanka's climate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, longan is well suited to Sri Lanka's lowland tropical climate, particularly in the wet and intermediate zones. It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and warm temperatures year-round. Mature trees are reasonably drought-tolerant, making them practical for home gardens and small farms across much of the island.
