Question 1

What is Desmodium heterophyllum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, Desmodium heterophyllum is used in preparations intended to reduce inflammation, support wound healing, ease respiratory complaints, and manage digestive disorders including diarrhoea. These are traditional uses documented in folk and classical Ayurvedic practice. Consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is advised before any therapeutic use.

Question 2

Where does Desmodium heterophyllum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across a wide range of habitats in Sri Lanka, including roadsides, paddy field edges, home garden borders, and secondary forest margins. It is found from coastal lowlands through to mid-elevation hill country zones, tolerating varied soil types and moisture conditions.

Question 3

What does Desmodium heterophyllum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a low-growing, creeping perennial herb in the legume family. The plant has variable leaf forms — trifoliate leaves on erect stems and simpler leaves on trailing branches — which give rise to its species name heterophyllum, meaning different-leaved. It produces small pink to purple flowers and jointed seed pods.

Question 4

Is Desmodium heterophyllum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Desmodium heterophyllum is native to tropical Asia and is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It is well established in Sri Lanka's flora and has been incorporated into the island's traditional medical system over many centuries.

Question 5

What chemical compounds are found in Desmodium heterophyllum?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins in Desmodium heterophyllum. These compound classes are associated with the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties attributed to the plant in traditional medicine. Full clinical trials remain limited.

Question 6

Is Desmodium heterophyllum the same as tick clover?

Accepted Answer

Desmodium heterophyllum is commonly known as variable-leaved tick clover or hetero, the latter name more widely used in agriculture where it is recognised as a useful ground cover and nitrogen-fixing legume. The sticky seed pods that cling to fabric and fur give the tick clover group their common name.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Desmodium heterophyllum during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many rural village tours and botanical garden visits in Sri Lanka include introductions to locally used medicinal plants. Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens near Kandy features extensive documented plant collections. Home garden walks in the hill country and Gampaha district also frequently showcase plants used in traditional Ayurvedic practice.
