Question 1

What is Cuscuta reflexa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Cuscuta reflexa is used in Ayurvedic medicine to support liver function, as a mild laxative, for topical relief of headaches, and in hair care preparations. It also appears in compound formulas addressing inflammation and, in some traditions, male reproductive health. All use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Cuscuta reflexa found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Cuscuta reflexa grows wild throughout Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry and intermediate zones. It is commonly found along roadsides, hedgerows, and forest margins, where it parasitises shrubs and small trees. It is also grown in some Ayurvedic herbal gardens for medicinal supply.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Cuscuta reflexa?

Accepted Answer

Cuscuta reflexa is known in Sinhala as Akas Wael, a name reflecting its aerial, rootless growth habit. In Sanskrit Ayurvedic texts it is referred to as Akashavalli or Amaravalli.

Question 4

Is Cuscuta reflexa a parasite?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is an obligate parasite. It lacks chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesize, instead extracting water and nutrients directly from a living host plant through structures called haustoria. The original seedling root withers once it successfully attaches to a host.

Question 5

Does Cuscuta reflexa have any scientifically proven health benefits?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory and animal studies have identified antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties in Cuscuta reflexa extracts. However, robust clinical trials in humans remain limited, and the plant should be considered a subject of ongoing research rather than a clinically proven treatment.

Question 6

How is Cuscuta reflexa different from other Cuscuta species?

Accepted Answer

Cuscuta reflexa is the primary species used in South Asian Ayurvedic and Unani medicine and is the species most commonly encountered in Sri Lanka's wild habitats. It differs from Cuscuta chinensis, which dominates Traditional Chinese Medicine, though both share broadly similar bioactive compounds and research profiles.

Question 7

Can I use Cuscuta reflexa at home as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

Self-administration is not recommended without professional guidance. The plant's chemistry varies depending on its host, and incorrect preparation or dosage can lead to adverse effects. Always consult a licensed Ayurvedic physician before using any preparation containing Cuscuta reflexa.
