Question 1

What is a Paththini Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

A Paththini Devalaya is a Sri Lankan shrine dedicated to Pattini, a goddess associated with healing, chastity, and protection from disease. The shrines are found across the island and are active centres of devotion visited by both Sinhalese Buddhist and Tamil Hindu communities.

Question 2

Who is the goddess Pattini in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Pattini is a deity derived from the figure of Kannaki in the Tamil epic Cilappatikāram. In Sri Lanka she evolved into a protective goddess believed to ward off illness, drought, and misfortune. She is counted among the four guardian deities of the island and is venerated within a distinctly Sri Lankan syncretic religious tradition.

Question 3

What is a gammaduwa ceremony?

Accepted Answer

A gammaduwa is an all-night ritual drama performed in villages to propitiate Pattini and protect the community from epidemics or other calamities. It involves chanting, drumming, costumed performances of myths, and sometimes fire-walking. The ceremony can last an entire night and is led by a hereditary kapurala priest.

Question 4

Can tourists visit a Paththini Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

Yes, visitors are welcome at most Pattini shrines. You should dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering the inner sanctum, and be respectful during active ceremonies. Photography inside the shrine should only be attempted after checking with the presiding priest.

Question 5

What is the most important Paththini Devalaya in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Nawagamuwa Paththini Devalaya in the Kegalle district is widely considered one of the most significant Pattini shrines in Sri Lanka. It draws large numbers of devotees, especially during annual festival cycles, and is the site of elaborate rituals including fire-walking.

Question 6

Is the Paththini cult Buddhist or Hindu?

Accepted Answer

It is both and neither exclusively. The cult is a product of Sri Lanka's religious syncretism, blending Hindu origins with Buddhist frameworks and indigenous folk traditions. Most regular devotees are Sinhalese Buddhists, while Tamil Hindus venerate the same figure as Kannaki Amman. The two traditions coexist and occasionally share the same ritual space.

Question 7

What offerings are made at a Paththini Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

Common offerings include oil lamps, incense, coconut flowers, and jasmine garlands. Devotees who have made a vow and seen it fulfilled often return to sponsor a ceremony or contribute to the shrine's upkeep. Vendors near the entrance typically sell ready-prepared offering baskets for visitors unfamiliar with the tradition.

Question 8

How is Pattini connected to the Esala Perahera in Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Pattini is one of the four guardian deities of Sri Lanka whose caskets are carried in the annual Esala Perahera procession in Kandy. Her casket is borne alongside those of Natha, Vishnu, and Kataragama, reflecting her deep integration into the island's royal and Buddhist ceremonial culture.
