Halpé Tea is a family tea business from the hills of Uva, in Sri Lanka. It began in 1971, when A.P.D. Abeyrathna bought the Uva Halpewatte tea factory, built in 1940, together with the Uva Greenland estate, which had been owned by a British planter. The factory stands 1,230 metres above sea level, 6 km from Ella, and takes its name from Halpé, the village where the family comes from. He still runs the business with his wife and three sons.
The tea is made at the family's own factory from its own plantations. It is not kept in warehouses and not blended with tea from anywhere else, and it carries the Sri Lanka Tea Board's Lion logo for pure Ceylon tea. Halpé takes part in the Ethical Tea Partnership, and its organic teas are certified organic and Fairtrade. The company won six awards at the National Chamber of Exporters awards in 2016, among them the first Patrick Amarasinghe Challenge Trophy, and gold in the tea sector in 2022 and 2023.
The Halpé range takes in single-estate leaf grades, luxury caddies printed with the island's flowers and wildlife, flavoured black and green teas, fruit and herbal infusions, handmade golden and silver tips, organic Fairtrade tea bags and gift boxes.
