Guava House is a five-bedroom eco villa on a hilltop rubber plantation near Mawanella, between Colombo and Kandy, with an infinity pool looking out over the forest. Designed by RA Designs and now run by The Serendipity Collection, it is three thatched buildings raised on stilts across a four-acre plantation, with mango wood and teak inside, views of the surrounding mountains and paddy fields, and a housekeeper who cooks.
The villa has five bedrooms in three buildings: the main villa at the top of the hill, with its double-height living room, mezzanine, wooden deck and infinity pool, and two chalets lower down the slope looking over paddy fields and a stream. Every bed has a mosquito net, and the rooms have canopy beds and fans. The names below are the ones you will see in the booking form.
A family or group that wants the place to itself should book the Full Villa. If you book only part of the property, ask us how the pool and living areas are shared with other guests at the time.
Meals are home-cooked by the housekeeper, Jeyanthi, using local ingredients, and guests regularly single out her Sri Lankan cooking. There is a kitchen with a refrigerator, crockery and cutlery if you would rather cook for yourselves, and a washing machine. Tell the staff in advance what you like to eat.
Life here is slow: the infinity pool, hammocks, books and the birdlife of the plantation. Four mountain bikes are provided for rides through the village, past paddy fields and along the river, and the staff can arrange village excursions. Walkers can climb Bible Rock, about 5 kilometres away, for wide views of the hills, or hike to Uthuwankanda, the rock hideout of the outlaw Saradiel. Pack insect repellent, as this is a forest setting.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is about 18 kilometres away in a straight line, and the villa arranges day trips there and to Kandy, about 19 kilometres away, for the Temple of the Tooth and Kandy Lake. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are closer, about 14 kilometres away, and the National Railway Museum at Kadugannawa is on the way.
The nearest station on the Main Line is Kadugannawa, roughly 9 kilometres away in a straight line. Arrange a pick-up with the villa or with us in advance, as the last stretch is on rural roads.
The villa is about 68 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, inland towards the hill country. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Guava House, which brings you and your luggage up to the villa.
It suits families and groups of friends who want a private, quiet house in the forest with a pool, good home cooking and walks from the door, and who do not mind the odd insect. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Mawanella.
