Question 1

What is Lablab purpureus called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Lablab purpureus is commonly known as 'me karal' or 'mal karal'. It is also referred to in English as hyacinth bean or field bean. The plant is cultivated widely across the island as both a food crop and a medicinal herb in the Ayurvedic tradition.

Question 2

Is Lablab purpureus safe to eat?

Accepted Answer

The immature green pods and properly cooked mature seeds are widely eaten across Sri Lanka and South Asia. Raw or undercooked mature seeds contain cyanogenic compounds and lectins that can cause illness, so prolonged soaking and thorough boiling are essential before consumption. Traditional preparation methods, practised for generations, effectively neutralise these anti-nutritional factors.

Question 3

What are the Ayurvedic uses of Lablab purpureus?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Lablab purpureus is used to address digestive complaints, inflammation, and nutritional deficiencies. The seeds, leaves, and roots each have specific applications in classical formulations. The plant is generally regarded as having cooling properties within Ayurvedic constitutional theory.

Question 4

Can Lablab purpureus be grown in a home garden in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Lablab purpureus is a common home garden plant throughout Sri Lanka. It grows vigorously on a simple trellis or fence, tolerates periods of dry weather, and produces pods over an extended harvest season. It performs well in both the dry and intermediate agro-climatic zones of the island.

Question 5

What does Lablab purpureus look like?

Accepted Answer

The plant is a climbing vine with trifoliate leaves and clusters of purple or white flowers that are typically pea-shaped. The seed pods are flat, slightly curved, and deep purple or green depending on the variety, turning papery as the seeds mature. Dried seeds range in colour from white and cream to dark brown or near-black.

Question 6

What soil benefits does Lablab purpureus provide?

Accepted Answer

Like other legumes, Lablab purpureus fixes atmospheric nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria in its root nodules. This enriches soil fertility for subsequent crops and makes it a valuable component of intercropping and crop-rotation systems. Farmers in Sri Lanka have used it as a green manure and cover crop for centuries.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's medicinal plant traditions?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants recognised in indigenous healing practice. Traditional home gardens, Ayurvedic treatment centres, and spice estates across the island offer practical insight into how plants like Lablab purpureus are cultivated and used. Regions such as Matale and Kandy are particularly associated with spice and medicinal plant cultivation.
