Question 1

What is Sida spinosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Sida spinosa is traditionally used as a tonic and adaptogen to support vitality and recovery from weakness. Its actions are broadly considered similar to those of the related species Sida cordifolia.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Sida spinosa?

Accepted Answer

Sida spinosa is generally referred to in Sinhala as Kurunduwäna, though regional names vary. In classical Sanskrit Ayurvedic texts it is often grouped under the name Bala, reflecting the close relationship between Sida species sharing similar therapeutic properties.

Question 3

Is Sida spinosa native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sida spinosa is found widely in tropical and subtropical regions across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, so it is not endemic to Sri Lanka. However, it grows naturally across the island's dry and intermediate zones and has been integrated into Sri Lanka's indigenous ayurvedic pharmacopoeia for centuries.

Question 4

What part of Sida spinosa plant is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The roots, leaves, and seeds of Sida spinosa are all used in traditional preparations. Roots are most commonly associated with tonic and anti-inflammatory formulations, while leaves are used in external poultices and aerial parts contribute to decoctions for fever and respiratory complaints.

Question 5

What alkaloids are found in Sida spinosa?

Accepted Answer

Sida spinosa contains ephedrine-type alkaloids in low concentrations, alongside flavonoids, beta-sitosterol, and mucilaginous polysaccharides. These compounds have been studied in laboratory settings for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, though robust clinical trials remain limited.

Question 6

Where can I see ayurvedic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Government-maintained herbal gardens, ayurvedic wellness resorts, and buffer zones around protected forests are good places to encounter labelled medicinal plants. Village cultural tours in the dry zone also provide informal encounters with plants like Sida spinosa growing in their natural field-margin habitats.

Question 7

Is Sida spinosa the same as Sida cordifolia?

Accepted Answer

They are distinct species within the same genus. Sida cordifolia (known as Country Mallow) is more widely cited in Ayurvedic texts under the name Bala, while Sida spinosa is sometimes grouped with it due to overlapping properties. A qualified botanist or ayurvedic physician can distinguish them by leaf shape and the distinctive paired spines of Sida spinosa.
