Question 1

What is Sida cordata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Sida cordata is traditionally classified among Bala herbs — plants associated with strength and vitality. It is used in formulations intended to support recovery, address inflammation, promote urinary health, and assist with postpartum care. The root and stem are the parts most commonly used in classical preparations.

Question 2

Does Sida cordata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sida cordata is widespread across Sri Lanka, growing in disturbed ground, roadsides, forest edges, and cultivation margins in both the wet and dry zones. It is found from the lowlands up to around 1,200 m elevation and is collected both from the wild and cultivated informally by traditional practitioners.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Sida cordata?

Accepted Answer

Sida cordata is known in Sinhala as Beraliya or Wal Kurumitiya, though vernacular names can vary by region. The plant belongs to the Malvaceae family and is related to the more widely known Sida rhombifolia, with which it is sometimes confused.

Question 4

What chemical compounds are found in Sida cordata?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids (including ephedrine-related compounds), flavonoids, sterols, and mucilaginous polysaccharides in Sida cordata. These constituents are thought to underlie some of the plant's traditional therapeutic applications, though extensive clinical trials are still limited.

Question 5

Is Sida cordata the same plant as Bala in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The classical Sanskrit term Bala refers to a group of plants, not a single species, and Sida cordata is one of several species placed in this category alongside close relatives like Sida rhombifolia. The Bala group is broadly associated with tonifying and restorative properties in classical Ayurvedic texts.

Question 6

How is Sida cordata different from Sida rhombifolia?

Accepted Answer

Sida cordata has heart-shaped leaves and a trailing or semi-erect habit, while Sida rhombifolia grows more upright and has rhomboid-shaped leaves. Both are used in Ayurvedic medicine and share some phytochemical characteristics, but they are botanically distinct species with subtle differences in their chemical profiles.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant tradition?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine and institutions such as the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital maintain records of traditional medicinal plants including Sida cordata. Academic publications and government-backed ethnobotanical surveys also document the island's medicinal flora in detail.
