Colombo is a city shaped by water. Situated within a river basin, the capital is naturally susceptible to flooding — and it is the wetlands threaded through its urban fabric that quietly keep the city in balance. This short film offers a glimpse into those green, waterlogged spaces and the remarkable ecological role they play.

Because of its position in a river basin, Colombo channels a significant share of its floodwaters into surrounding wetland areas. In fact, around 40% of floodwaters drain into these wetland zones, making them an indispensable natural buffer for the city's residents and infrastructure alike.

A Living Shield Against Floods

The wetlands of Colombo are not simply patches of soggy ground at the city's edge — they function as dynamic, breathing ecosystems that absorb and regulate excess water during heavy rains. Without them, the impact of flooding on Colombo's densely populated neighbourhoods would be considerably more severe. Their preservation is therefore as much a matter of urban resilience as it is of conservation.

Biodiversity in the Heart of the City

Beyond flood control, these wetland habitats support a rich variety of Wildlife, from waterbirds and reptiles to fish and invertebrates that thrive in the interplay of freshwater and vegetation. The proximity of such biodiversity to an active metropolitan centre makes Colombo's wetlands genuinely unusual among South Asian capitals.

One of the most accessible places to experience this urban wilderness is Beddagana Wetland Park, a protected wetland reserve that allows visitors to observe the ecosystem up close, along walking trails set among reeds, open water, and the calls of resident and migratory birds.

Why These Spaces Matter

The ecological value of Colombo's wetlands extends well beyond the city limits. They filter water, sequester carbon, and provide refuge for species that might otherwise find little room in a growing urban landscape. Recognising that 40% of floodwaters are absorbed by these areas underscores just how deeply the city's natural and built environments depend on one another — a relationship this video captures in vivid, quiet detail.
