Wadugewatta, Galle, Sri Lanka

Wadugewatta is a spacious and airy beach villa set within tropical gardens that lead directly to a secluded beach in the fishing village of Mihiripenna, just 15 minutes from the historic city of Galle. Designed by its British owners, the property combines homely comfort with tastefully decorated interiors furnished with antiques and artefacts from Sri Lanka, Japan and China.

Hidden within the grounds is a further building housing an Ayurveda clinic that the British owners developed for the benefit of the surrounding village community. An experienced Ayurvedic physician provides curative treatments for children, adults and the aged, while separate Ayurveda facilities are reserved for guests staying at the villa.

Location

Situated amidst tall, shady trees and landscaped gardens, Wadugewatta sits along the south coast, ideally placed to explore the diverse southern heritage and sun-kissed beaches of the region. The journey from Colombo's International Airport takes about 4.5 hours by road, or guests may opt for the air taxi to nearby Koggala.

Accommodation

The four-bedroom villa can accommodate up to eight adults and one or two children. Two double rooms feature courtyard gardens, private seating areas, and ensuite open-air bathrooms with hot water showers, each fitted with king-sized beds and mosquito netting. The third double room and the twin room each have their own open-air bathroom located just across the hallway, along with seating areas. Rooms do not have air conditioning; instead, overhead fans and ocean breezes keep the interiors cool and comfortable.

Facilities

A spacious living and dining area opens out to a swimming pool and lush tropical gardens, with alfresco dining available by the poolside. A library occupies the mezzanine floor, and a well-equipped kitchen is on hand for guests who prefer to cook for themselves. Alternatively, the in-house cook is happy to discuss preferences, handle grocery shopping from the village market, and prepare tasty rice and curries. Fresh seafood is brought directly to the doorstep by local fishermen.

The resident staff includes an English-speaking manager, a houseboy, a steward and a gardener. The Ayurveda centre offers flower baths, treatment rooms, relaxing massages and curative therapies, all supervised by the Ayurvedic physician. Between sessions, guests can unwind in a hammock by the sea or dine outdoors beneath the trees — a gentle rhythm that captures the unhurried spirit of the southern Sri Lankan coast.
