Governors Camp Yala lies in the buffer zone of Yala National Park in Sri Lanka's dry south-east, close to the park entrance and surrounded by dry forest and grassland. Kataragama is about 20.7 km away, which makes the camp a practical base for early-morning and evening game drives.
The camp is 201 km as the crow flies from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake; by road the drive is about 315 km and usually takes 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and the weather. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Governors Camp Yala.
Guests stay in safari-style tents and chalets, each with plush bedding, an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower, ceiling fans and a private veranda looking out over the surrounding bushland.
Meals of Sri Lankan and international dishes are served in an open-air dining area under the stars, and in the evening there is seating around a communal campfire for stories and stargazing. A tea and coffee station is available throughout the day, spa and massage treatments can be arranged after a safari, and there is secure parking on site.
The camp arranges day and night game drives into Yala National Park to look for leopards, elephants, sloth bears and birdlife, as well as sunset drives and photography safaris. Closer to camp there are guided birdwatching walks, nature treks through the native vegetation, visits to nearby villages, and optional trips to historic temples and local cultural sites.
